The Uniform State Test is a new development in the mortgage licensing for Mortgage Loan Originators.
The NMLS announced in 2013 that state testing was changing. Several states has adopted a single uniform state test for mortgage loan originators which is the UST and will serve as their state test. Passing this test meets the testing requirement for 24 regulators. Any future states joining will also the testing requirement.
Mortgage Loan Originators that are licensed have a lot to consider. If they ever need to meet the testing requirements in other states, or want to originate in a neighboring states, or handle their clients' second homes, taking the UST is essential.
The bottom line is, if you are never going to originate in a state you are not currently licensed in then you do not need to do anything.
But if you know or think you would benefit from being able to originate in additional states, then the UST may be worth taking advantage of.
